Tromsø combines Arctic history, culture and coastal nature at the mainland start of the journey. Across the ferry, Scenic Route Senja runs between Botnhamn and Gryllefjord through fishing villages, ocean, fjords and mountains, with designated viewpoints and rest areas. Darkness is necessary for aurora viewing, but cloud can obscure it and inland areas may offer clearer weather.
Plan for 7-9 nights. Seven to nine nights preserve Tromso and Senja as distinct bases and create multiple weather opportunities without promising an aurora display.
