The aurora is not an event with a date. It is a season, and a gamble inside it. Charged particles from the Sun meet the upper atmosphere and light it green at around 100km, red higher still. What decides whether you see it is not rarity but three ordinary things stacked: darkness, clear sky, and a disturbed magnetic field. The far north loses the first of those entirely in midsummer, which is why the season opens as the nights come back in late August and closes when they shorten again in April. Activity clusters near the equinoxes, a real and slightly strange effect of how Earth tilts relative to the solar wind, so late September and late March carry the best odds of the year.

Where it is visible: A band roughly 65-70 degrees magnetic latitude. Strong storms push it much further south.
Being inside the oval matters more than going as far north as possible. On a quiet night Tromso or Fairbanks will outperform the Pole, and only a strong storm brings the lights to mid-latitudes.
