How to read the dates

First listed means the first month shown here, not necessarily the start of an event. A season already underway appears in the current month. Month totals and the full list include continuing seasons. In the photographic view, continuing seasons have their own expandable list. Missing or unconfirmed dates are never presented as an active season.

Dates confirmed
A published schedule. Check the organizer before booking.
Expected dates
Timing may change. Choose flexible bookings.
Predicted dates
Calculated timing, such as an astronomical event. Local viewing conditions still matter.
Season or typical season
A broad visiting window, not a promise of wildlife, color or good weather on a particular day.
Estimated timing
An estimate that may shift. Recheck conditions nearer departure.
Dates not confirmed
Keep it on your shortlist; wait for dates before committing.

Winter Cranes at Bosque del ApacheNew Mexico, USA · Nov 2026–Jan 2027 · Season

3 nights at destination · 4–6 ideal · Albuquerque (ABQ)

Base in Socorro · hire a car · refuge access $5 per vehicle/day.

Getting there & trip details

Fly into Albuquerque (ABQ). Allow travel time from home; check current prices and availability.

A car-based Socorro and refuge journey timed to broad winter crane presence, not a fixed roost or live count.

That's several dawns and dusks at the refuge and time to see the Rio Grande valley, whatever the cranes decide to do. Minimum nights are at the destination; allow extra time to travel from home.

Base in Socorro and hire a car. Refuge access is $5 per private vehicle per day. The Scenic Drive opens one hour before sunrise to one hour after sunset. Bring food and water. From Albuquerque, take I-25 south to exit 139, then US 380 and NM-1. Check road alerts before driving. USFWS visitor guidance · checked October 16, 2026 →

Before booking
  • Private vehicle
  • Tour Loop fee or accepted pass
  • Current refuge notices
Conditions to plan for
  • No drones, feeding, harassment or disruptive audio
  • Use legal pullouts and low speeds
  • Avoid artificial light for locating animals
  • Roosts move and no authoritative live count exists.
  • This itinerary focuses on Socorro and Bosque del Apache; allow a separate trip for Truth or Consequences.

Geminids over Joshua TreeVisible worldwide · December 13-14, 2026 · Predicted dates

3 nights at destination · 4–5 ideal · Palm Springs (PSP)

Getting there & trip details

Fly into Palm Springs (PSP). Allow travel time from home; check current prices and availability.

Explore the Morongo Basin with two nights to try for the Geminids around their maximum.

That's enough for both desert towns, a full day in the park and a second night under dark skies if clouds cover the peak. Minimum nights are at the destination; allow extra time to travel from home.

Before booking
  • Private vehicle
  • Park admission
  • Confirmed overnight base
Conditions to plan for
  • Cold-weather layers and water
  • Return to trailhead before winter darkness
  • Do not imply a cloud-free night
  • The shower is reliable; a clear observing night and visible meteor count are not.
  • Dark Sky Park status must not be described with a stale historical tier.

Mexico City and Valle de Bravo with the MonarchsMichoacan, Mexico · Nov 2026–Mar 2027 · Season

10 nights at destination · 10–12 ideal · Mexico City (MEX)

Getting there & trip details

Fly into Mexico City (MEX). Allow travel time from home; check current prices and availability.

A ten-night Mexico City and Valle de Bravo journey with a complete city-and-lake route, plus one conditional Piedra Herrada monarch day when the sanctuary is officially open and safely executable.

That's plenty of Mexico City, 3 relaxed nights in Valle de Bravo and a buffer before your flight home, so one sanctuary day doesn't have to carry the trip. Minimum nights are at the destination; allow extra time to travel from home.

Before booking
  • Compatible flights, five-plus-three-plus-two lodging blocks, daylight intercity transport, insurance and flexible cancellation terms
  • Confirmed airport, Mexico City base, Valle base and return chain with baggage and accessibility margins
  • Current permanent-site operations and traveler-specific mobility, medical and disruption plan
  • Arrange and confirm transport, access and the return journey separately for Teotihuacán or Piedra Herrada
Conditions to plan for
  • Use direct daylight intercity transport and follow current official travel, road, fire and air-quality advice
  • Use 911 for an emergency; 078 and 074 are limited road-assistance channels and do not establish medical custody
  • Never promise a sighting, sanctuary opening, operator, bus, room, safe route, receiving facility or map geometry before the target chain is bound
  • No monarch sighting, density, weather outcome, target date, sanctuary opening, capacity, admission, operator or access is guaranteed.
  • January or February is not selected in advance; the current evidence supports only a recurring November-to-March framework.
  • The map is unavailable because the evidence binds route identities but no independently verified coordinates or edge geometry; no colony location is public map material.
  • If Piedra Herrada is closed, unsafe, inaccessible or unsuitable, omit the sanctuary day entirely and keep the permanent Valle de Bravo chapter.
  • Xochimilco and Queretaro are extensions; Michoacan sanctuaries, Morelia, Dia de Muertos and El Capulin require separate Journeys rather than padding this route.

5 nights at destination · 7–9 ideal · New Chitose (CTS)

    February 4 to 11, 2027 · Dates confirmed

    Practical details & sources

A compact Hokkaido winter-city journey pairing Sapporo's three festival sites with Otaru's Snow Light Path.

That's a relaxed stay in Sapporo and a separate visit to Otaru, with slack for slow winter trains and icy walks. Minimum nights are at the destination; allow extra time to travel from home.

    Before booking
    • Winter rail plan
    • Current site hours and shuttle information
    • Slip-resistant footwear
    Conditions to plan for
    • Prepare for ice, snow and falling roof snow
    • Watch airport and JR disruption
    • Treat outdoor exhibits as weather-sensitive
    • The 2027 detailed program is still pending.
    • This itinerary covers Sapporo and Otaru; allow a separate trip for other parts of Hokkaido.

  • Tromsø and Senja Under the Aurora →

5 nights at destination · 7–9 ideal · Tromsø (TOS)

    Nov 2026–Feb 2027 · Estimated timing

    Practical details & sources

Travel from Tromsø to Senja with several chances to look for the northern lights. Aurora sightings are never guaranteed.

That gives you time in both Tromsø and Senja and several nights to try for the aurora. Minimum nights are at the destination; allow extra time to travel from home.

    Before booking
    • Confirmed Ferry 181 or safe land-route alternative
    • Winter-ready transport
    • Current road and avalanche checks
    Conditions to plan for
    • Prefer a registered guide when winter driving experience is limited
    • Use legal winter tyres
    • Never promise an aurora display
    • Lyngen is intentionally excluded from this Journey identity.
    • Kp or solar-cycle position cannot establish long-horizon viewing confidence.

  • Maui During Humpback Season →

6 nights at destination · 8–10 ideal · Kahului (OGG)

    Dec 2026–Apr 2027 · Season

    Practical details & sources

Explore Maui from Kahului to Haleakalā and Hāna, with a chance to see humpback whales in winter. Follow wildlife-viewing rules; sightings are never guaranteed.

That gives Haleakalā, the north shore and Hāna–Kīpahulu their own days, with the whales as a bonus. Minimum nights are at the destination; allow extra time to travel from home.

    Before booking
    • Private vehicle
    • Timed state-park reservations where required
    • Haleakalā sunrise reservation if selected
    Conditions to plan for
    • Maintain the federal 100-yard vessel approach rule
    • Check HDOT, NPS and DLNR notices
    • Respect Lahaina and avoid impacted sites
    • Wildlife is never guaranteed.
    • ʻĪao Valley State Monument publishes daily 07:00–18:00 hours; nonresidents need advance entry and parking reservations, and access remains subject to current official DLNR rules and availability.

  • Mexico City and Valle de Bravo with the Monarchs →

10 nights at destination · 10–12 ideal · Mexico City (MEX)

    Nov 2026–Mar 2027 · Season

    Practical details & sources

6 nights at destination · 8–10 ideal · Learmonth Airport (LEA)

    Mar–Jul 2027 · Season

    Practical details & sources

A six-night Exmouth hub joining Cape Range and a licensed Ningaloo marine day, with wildlife and water entry never guaranteed.

That allows for the long trip to Exmouth, 2 chances to get on the water and slow days in Cape Range, so the trip doesn't hinge on one sighting. Minimum nights are at the destination; allow extra time to travel from home.

    Before booking
    • Pre-booked hire car at Learmonth for airport and Cape Range edges
    • Currently DBCA-licensed commercial whale-shark operator
    • Confirmed marine-day inventory, pickup or meeting point and participation rules
    • Live road, park, marine-warning and weather checks
    Conditions to plan for
    • Check warnings, wind, waves, swell, tide and water level from at least 72 hours ahead and daily; do not depart under an active marine warning
    • Carry ample water, limit heat exposure and choose graded Cape Range activities appropriate to conditions
    • Treat remote roads and shore sites as no-signal terrain; carry the advised emergency communication equipment and avoid night driving
    • Independent open-water swimming, balance and moving-vessel reboarding are participation gates, and the vessel master or traveler may decline water entry
    • Follow DBCA vessel and swimmer separation rules; never touch, ride, crowd or restrict a whale shark
    • Wild animals are never guaranteed; the Journey promises no sighting, swim, repeat date or encounter quality.
    • No operator, price, pickup, road state, forecast, park opening or 2027 inventory is frozen by this blueprint.
    • Cape Range and the marine day are separate out-and-back spokes from Exmouth; there is no traveler-operated Cape Range-to-reef water edge and the Journey is not car-free.
    • A land or vessel-observer day remains a complete fallback when water entry is unsafe, unavailable or personally unsuitable.

12 nights at destination · 12–14 ideal · Lima (LIM)

    June 24, 2027 · Dates not confirmed

    Practical details & sources

A twelve-night Peru journey from Lima to Cusco, Inti Raymi, the Sacred Valley and one deliberate Machu Picchu approach.

Twelve to fourteen nights give Lima a real opening chapter, protect Cusco acclimatization and Inti Raymi, and keep the Sacred Valley, one Machu Picchu approach and recovery from competing for the same days. Minimum nights are at the destination; allow extra time to travel from home.

    Before booking
    • Confirmed Lima arrival and domestic-flight plan
    • Current EMUFEC program
    • Current Machu Picchu circuit and entry inventory
    • Confirmed rail and final-bus plan
    • Altitude acclimatization plan
    Conditions to plan for
    • Treat altitude illness seriously
    • Monitor protests, weather and rail disruption
    • Do not reuse prior-edition times or inventory
    • June 24 is reserved for Inti Raymi from Qorikancha through Plaza de Armas to Saqsaywaman; neither Machu Picchu nor the Inca Trail occurs that day.
    • The train-based Machu Picchu route still requires current circuit, rail and final-bus inventory.
    • The Classic Inca Trail is not additive and remains a separately gated replacement route.

    Practical details & sources

A six-night Winnipeg-and-Churchill journey through subarctic history, culture and the recurring summer beluga season, with wildlife never guaranteed.

That allows for the Winnipeg connection, buffers for remote travel and a proper stay in Churchill. Minimum nights are at the destination; allow extra time to travel from home.

    • Current Parks Canada, museum and community-program operations
    • Medical, accessibility, insurance and emergency-evacuation fit
    Conditions to plan for

  • Aomori Nebuta and Tohoku Summer →

12 nights at destination · 12–14 ideal · Tokyo Haneda (HND)

    August 2 to 7, 2027 · Dates confirmed

    Practical details & sources

A twelve-night northbound Japan journey linking Tokyo, Matsushima, Aomori and Hirosaki around the recurring Nebuta season, with all 2027 festival operations held until official publication.

That's a real first taste of Tokyo, proper stays in Matsushima and Hirosaki, and a buffer around your Aomori days in case of flight or rail delays. Minimum nights are at the destination; allow extra time to travel from home.

    Before booking
    • Compatible international flight, permanent-route lodging and reserved rail
    • Confirm your transport and connections from Haneda through Tokyo, Sendai, Matsushima, Aomori and Hirosaki, including the return journey
    • Current permanent-site hours and traveler-specific heat, mobility, medical and disruption plan
    • Check the official 2027 programme before adding festival activities
    Conditions to plan for
    • Treat crowding, darkness, prolonged standing and late egress as independent go-or-no-go conditions
    • Use JMA warnings, precipitation nowcast, typhoon information and official heat alerts; suspend exposed activity when conditions require it
    • Keep free viewing, paid seating and haneto participation as separate choices and never make participation necessary for the Journey
    • Call 119 for emergency medical help; the responding service selects the receiving facility according to current capacity and clinical need
    • Never infer a safe route through event closures or promise a train, hotel, seat, accessible path, shelter or hospital before the target chain is bound
    • The exact 2027 festival dates, times, float program, route, seating, participation, closures, accessibility and crowd operations are not yet published and are never inferred from 2026.
    • The four-night Aomori block must overlap two separately viable official parade opportunities plus one full permanent-baseline day before target dates can be selected.
    • Early-August climate normals are not a forecast; heat, humidity, heavy rain, typhoon disruption and rail interruption remain live conditions.
    • The map is withheld because no fixed coordinate in the research packet was independently bound; it never guesses event, rail, pedestrian, closure, evacuation or hotel geometry.
    • Oirase or Hiraizumi may form one separately qualified two-night extension; Hachinohe and the Hirosaki or Goshogawara festivals remain separate rather than padding or duplicating the catalyst.

    • Surface snorkel only in Hanifaru: no scuba, independent swimming, anchoring, feeding, touching, riding, chasing, blocking or surrounding wildlife
    • Maintain the current required distance and become passive if an animal approaches
    • Cancel water entry for unsafe sea, thunder, poor visibility, illness, equipment, communications, certificate, permit or ratio failure
    • Mantas, whale sharks, counts, aggregation, feeding, proximity, weather, water clarity and a Hanifaru opening are never guaranteed.
    • The current offer includes one safari for two; added nights do not imply a second outing or a repeat after no sighting.
    • The documentary photograph shows reef mantas elsewhere in the Maldives in 2003, not Hanifaru Bay or a promised 2027 encounter.
    • The map shows MLE, Landaa and the official protected-area identity as fixed custody points; it never shows wildlife, a flight path, vessel track, swimmer route, lunar hotspot, jetty or guessed drop zone.
    • Baa scuba, a Dharavandhoo base, whale-shark pursuit and a Malé cultural stay remain separate rather than padding this one-base Journey.

    Practical details & sources

A ten-night Sydney harbour-and-coast journey timed for the total solar eclipse of July 22, 2028, with visibility never guaranteed.

That makes the long flight worth it, leaves plenty of time for the harbour, the Garden and North Head, and keeps eclipse day free. Minimum nights are at the destination; allow extra time to travel from home.

    Before booking
    • Confirmed airport, central lodging and permanent city transport
    • Current harbour, garden and North Head access matched to the traveler
    • Separate authority-approved allocation before any eclipse observation
    Conditions to plan for
    • Never look at the partially eclipsed Sun without an undamaged ISO 12312-2 compliant solar viewer or properly filtered optical device
    • Never use eclipse glasses with a camera, binoculars or telescope; optics require a front-mounted solar filter and competent supervision
    • Remove eye protection only during verified totality at the verified site and replace it immediately when the bright Sun returns
    • Cancel direct viewing when exact site timing, viewer controls, lawful access or trained supervision cannot be proven
    • Treat cloud, smoke, rain, wind, lightning, coastal hazards, crowd pressure and closures as independent stop conditions
    • Use formed North Head tracks, remain behind barriers and never repurpose the headland as an unapproved viewing site
    • Clear sky, visible totality, duration, weather, observation allocation, crowd conditions and photographic results are never guaranteed.
    • The exact primary and fallback observation sites remain unplotted until the responsible authorities publish and bind them.
    • North Head is a permanent coastal chapter and route rehearsal only; it is not an approved eclipse observation site.
    • The map shows stable fixed places and accountable route classes only, never an eclipse path, shadow, cloud, vessel, closure, crowd, parking, walking, emergency or live transit geometry.
    • Whale watching is incidental and unguaranteed; Blue Mountains, Dubbo and Kimberley remain separate rather than padding this compact Sydney Journey.
