Each winter tens of thousands of cranes stage at Bosque del Apache, joined by thousands of snow and Ross's geese roosting on the same ponds. The moment is the dawn fly-out: near sunrise the whole flock lifts off the water at once against the Chupadera Mountains, one of North America's great wildlife spectacles.
