Kazakhstan holds some forty wild tulip species, including Greig's tulip, the oversized red parent of two hundred garden varieties, and each April they burn across the slopes of Central Asia's oldest nature reserve. The Dutch got them four centuries ago, secondhand, via the Ottoman court.
