Marine wildlife · May to September 2027
Annual · summer
Two kinds of killer whale, one inland sea.
The Salish Sea hosts two orca nations that share water but not a menu: the endangered fish-eating Southern Residents summering after salmon, and the seal-hunting Bigg's whales now seen in every month. Lime Kiln Point is the rare place you can watch either from shore.
best land-based viewing: Lime Kiln Point State Park
Where it is visible: San Juan Islands, Washington, USA
Washington law requires vessels to keep 1,000 yards from Southern Residents (200 from Bigg's); shore viewing avoids all of it.
Orcas of the Salish Sea in 2027 is May to September 2027.
