The lay of the landCancun built its entire identity around a single postcard: a narrow barrier island of white sand facing water so clear it reads as turquoise from a plane window. The Hotel Zone is the version most visitors see (resort after resort, built for arriving and never leaving), but the real draw is what's within reach of it: Tulum's cliffside ruins, Chichen Itza's pyramid, and cenotes scattered through the jungle inland. The Hotel Zone and Downtown Cancun are different worlds - stay in the Zone for beach, eat in Downtown for real prices.

Tulum and Chichen Itza are both doable as long day trips; book the ruins early to beat both the heat and the tour buses.

What to see

Hotel Zone Beach & Nichupté Lagoon, The narrow strip of the hotel zone is squeezed between the turquoise Caribbean on one side and the calm, mangrove-lined Nichupté Lagoon on the other, giving Cancun two completely different waterfronts within a few blocks of each other.

MUSA Underwater Museum, More than 500 life-size sculptures rest on the seafloor between Cancun and Isla Mujeres, forming an artificial reef that doubles as one of the world's largest underwater art museums.

El Rey Ruins, Tucked in the middle of the hotel zone, this compact Mayan archaeological site was a fishing and trading outpost centuries before Cancun's resorts were built, and its lawns are home to a resident population of iguanas.

Playa Delfines, One of the last public beaches in the hotel zone not blocked by resorts, Playa Delfines sits below a bluff with the iconic "Cancún" letter sign and open views of the Caribbean.

Isla Mujeres, This small island a short ferry ride from Cancun has calm Caribbean coves, Mayan ruins at Punta Sur, and a laid-back golf-cart pace that's a world away from the hotel zone.
