Best time to visit Jakarta: Jun–Sep. Southeast Asia's biggest megacity, a serious street food scene, and the main gateway to Bali and beyond.
Jakarta is Southeast Asia's biggest megacity and rarely a destination on its own (most travelers connect through on the way to Bali or Yogyakarta), but it rewards a day or two if there's time. Kota Tua, the old Dutch colonial quarter, preserves a strip of 17th-century architecture and a genuinely good National Museum, and the street food scene (nasi goreng, sate, martabak) is dense and excellent even by Indonesian standards. Traffic is legendarily bad, among the worst of any major world city, which makes the newer MRT and TransJakarta busway the far more reliable way to get around than a car.
The sweet spot is Jun–Sep. Plan around it and you will catch Jakarta close to its best.
Fly into Soekarno-Hatta International (CGK). From there Jakarta is an easy hop to the center.
