The lay of the landPortland runs on food carts and beer in equal measure: pods of a dozen-plus carts cluster across downtown and the eastside, covering nearly every cuisine, while the city's brewery count rivals anywhere in the country. Powell's City of Books, an entire city block of new and used titles, anchors downtown for anyone who needs a rainy-day plan, and it rains a lot, roughly October through May, which is exactly why summer here is treated like a reward.
